Black Scabbardfish

A rigorous quality control ensures our fish has a fresh and unmistakable flavor, especially the Black Scabbardfish fillet, one of our flagship products.

The Black Scabbardfish is a species with an elongated body, a very distinctive pointed head, and large jaws with long, sharp teeth – a predator. This species can be easily distinguished from similar ones by the number of dorsal spines and rays. It reaches maturity at about 80 to 85 cm.

In mainland Portugal, the Black Scabbardfish is caught along the coast from Sesimbra to Matosinhos, using artisanal and traditional methods, specifically the deep longline technique developed by Sesimbra fishermen.

Interestingly, this fishing method is specific to the fishermen of Sesimbra, who have developed and perfected it over time. This fishing gear (longline – a device with hooks) is highly selective and considered the most environmentally sustainable.

ArtesanalPesca members are responsible for almost all Black Scabbardfish catches in Portuguese continental waters. We take full responsibility for marketing the entire catch of our affiliated vessels, which is around 2,000 tonnes annually, thereby contributing to fishery regulation based on sustainability principles.
