Artisanal Fishing

By using more selective and less invasive fishing methods, we ensure sustainable exploitation of our natural resources.

ArtesanalPesca members are exclusively engaged in artisanal fishing.

Black Scabbardfish fishing is carried out with deep longlines, a passive fishing method highly selective and considered to have minimal environmental impact compared to less selective and more harmful methods. Using whole Sardines or Mackerel as bait ensures that juvenile fish are almost never caught.

Although ArtesanalPesca is best known for Black Scabbardfish, some members use other artisanal fishing methods targeting species like Sardines, Horse Mackerel, Mackerel, and Octopus.

Small pelagic fish (Sardines, Horse Mackerel, and Mackerel) are caught with purse seine nets, and vessels are commonly called “purse seiners.”

Octopus fishing is done with traps (pots) and alcatruzes, which are passive and very low-impact methods.

Our goal is to extend our marketing strategy to other species and artisanal fishing methods in Portugal, adding value to seafood, dignifying artisanal fishermen, and ensuring resource sustainability.
